What this knowledge base covers
Falling behind on tax lodgement is far more common than most Australians realise, and it is almost always fixable. This knowledge base explains, in plain English, exactly what happens when tax returns, business activity statements or company obligations go unlodged - what the Australian Taxation Office actually does, what it costs, and the order in which you should deal with it.
Every guide is written for people and businesses who are already behind, not for people filing on time. That means we start from where you are: several years overdue, a default assessment already issued, a director penalty notice in the mail, or a tax debt you cannot pay in one payment. Each article sets out the practical sequence - bring lodgements up to date first, establish the real debt figure, then negotiate a payment arrangement and apply for penalty remission where the facts support it.
The topics fall into four groups. Overdue lodgement covers late individual, sole trader and company returns, including what to do when records are missing. BAS and GST covers unlodged activity statements, lost GST credits and the four-year credit time limit. Penalties and interest explains failure to lodge on time penalty units, the general interest charge, and how remission requests are actually assessed. ATO debt covers payment plans, director penalty notices, garnishee notices and debt reported to credit reporting bureaus.
Rates, penalty unit values and thresholds are reviewed against ATO source material and updated when they change, and every article carries a visible published and last-reviewed date. Content is reviewed by a registered tax agent listed on the Tax Practitioners Board public register. These guides are general information only - they are not personal tax advice, and your own outcome depends on your circumstances.
