What happens on the call
The assessment runs for about 30 minutes with a registered tax agent. It is a working call, not a sales pitch. We start by mapping exactly what the ATO is expecting from you - which income tax returns, business activity statements, or company lodgements are outstanding, and how far back they go. Most people are surprised to learn they are not as far behind as they feared, and almost everyone is relieved to finally see the full picture written down in one place.
From there we talk through the likely penalty and interest position, whether failure to lodge penalties are already accruing, and what a remission request would realistically look like in your situation. If there is an existing tax debt, we explain how a payment plan is normally structured and what the ATO tends to accept. You finish the call with a written scope, a fixed fee, and a lodgement order - which returns we file first and why sequencing matters.
What to have ready
Nothing is mandatory. You can book with no paperwork at all and we will work it out together. That said, the call goes faster if you can put your hands on a few things beforehand:
- Your TFN or ABN, and the ACN if a company is involved.
- Roughly which years you think are outstanding - a guess is fine, we verify against ATO records.
- Any recent ATO letters, default assessment notices, or debt reminders you have received.
- An idea of your income sources for the missing years: employment, sole trader, rental, investments.
- Whether you are registered for GST, and if so whether BAS lodgements are also behind.
No judgment, and nothing is triggered
Booking an assessment does not notify the ATO, does not start a clock, and does not commit you to anything. We do not add you as your tax agent on ATO systems unless you ask us to and sign an engagement. People fall behind for ordinary reasons - illness, a business that got busy, a relationship breakdown, a year that simply got away from them. We have seen every version of it, and the conversation is confidential either way.
Prefer not to book a call?
Some people would rather not talk on the phone until they know where they stand. That is fine. Send the details through the form on our contact page and we will respond in writing within one business day with the same assessment: what is outstanding, what it is likely to cost to fix, and what happens next.
