The head-to-head

The shape translation: a solo operator, price-driven, self-serving the books, with an accountant who sees the file once a year, gets real value from QBO. A working accountant relationship, employees, a growth trajectory and ecosystem needs point to Xero most days. And the third corner of the triangle, inventory and heavy payroll, beats both natively.

Switching and the fine print

The same switching physics as every migration applies: balances and contacts move, while reconciliation history, payroll year-to-date, STP continuity and recurring automations are the real hours. Move at a quarter boundary only, with the BAS lodged on both sides, and only for a capability or genuine-cost reason that survives the renewal-price test.

The universal caveat holds here too. Neither platform fixes classification judgment, neither replaces the structural advice layer, and a file that is months behind with unlodged BAS costs the same reconstruction in either. The brand on the login page has never once changed a penalty notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is QuickBooks or Xero better in Australia?
QuickBooks on price, Xero on local ecosystem and payroll integration - with the accountant-network factor deciding it for most businesses that use an advisor.
Is QuickBooks cheaper than Xero?
Generally yes at entry and mid tiers. Judge on post-promo renewal pricing, and against total cost including your accountant's time in the file.
Does QuickBooks handle BAS and STP?
Yes - GST and BAS natively, and STP payroll via its embedded payroll engine. Both platforms are fully compliant.
Which is better for a sole trader?
Price-sensitive self-servers do well on QBO's lower tiers. Sole traders on a growth path, or working with an accountant, usually find Xero's ecosystem repays the gap.
Is switching between them worth it?
Only for a capability gap or a durable cost difference. Migration's real cost is history and payroll continuity, not the export file.
