The two dates that matter
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1 July | myTax and agent lodgment open for the year just ended. Legal, possible, and usually premature |
| Late July, typically the last week | Employers must finalise Single Touch Payroll data, marked tax ready, and bank, dividend and health fund pre-fill has substantially landed |
Between those dates sits the trap. Your payslip's year-to-date figure and your employer's finalised figure do not always match, thanks to reportable fringe benefits, super corrections and bonus timing. Lodge off the payslip and the ATO's data matching flags the mismatch, which means processing delays or an amendment you never needed.
How to know your personal green light
Three checks before you lodge
Income statement says "Tax ready"
In myGov, go to ATO online services, then Employment, then Income statements. The status must read Tax ready, not Year-to-date. This is the big one.
Pre-fill has your interest and dividends
Open the return in myTax and see what is already populated. Banks and share registries report through July.
Private health details have loaded
Health funds report through July too. Missing cover data is a common cause of a corrected assessment.
All three ticked? Lodge, even if it is mid July. The date on the calendar matters less than the state of your data.
Who genuinely can lodge on 1 July
Simple affairs with no employer finalisation risk: income was only government payments, you are lodging a nil year or a non-lodgment advice, or you are lodging a prior year return, where the data is long settled. Overdue years should not wait for anything: see the overdue returns guide.
Early lodgment before 30 June? Almost never
Lodging before the financial year ends is reserved for narrow cases, mainly foreign residents departing Australia permanently with no further Australian income. Everyone else waits for 1 July, because there is no early bird channel. Timing for the biggest refund is a different question, covered in when should you do your tax return?
ATO pre-fill and finalisation timing checked August 2026.
