Estimate only. The ATO withholding tables round in whole-dollar steps, so your payslip may differ by a few dollars.

Why your payslip and this calculator can differ

  • Employers use the ATO's published withholding tables, which round in fixed dollar steps rather than calculating to the cent.
  • Salary sacrifice, child support deductions, union fees and voluntary extra withholding all reduce your net pay without changing your tax liability.
  • Overtime and bonuses can push a single pay period into a higher annualised band, so more is withheld that period and sorted out on assessment.
  • Withholding is an estimate all year, and your actual position is only settled when you lodge.

Common questions

How much tax is withheld from a $1,500 weekly wage?

On $1,500 a week ($78,000 a year) a resident claiming the tax-free threshold has roughly $325 a week withheld for income tax and Medicare levy, leaving about $1,175 in the hand. Employers use the ATO tax tables, so the exact cent figure can differ by a dollar or two.

Why doesn't this match my payslip exactly?

The ATO's published withholding tables round to whole dollars in fixed steps, and your employer may also withhold for salary sacrifice, child support, extra voluntary amounts or an upward variation. This calculator annualises your pay and divides the annual liability back down, which lands within a few dollars of the tables.

What is the tax-free threshold and should I claim it?

The tax-free threshold is the first $18,200 of annual income, which is untaxed. Claim it with your main employer only. Claiming it at two jobs at once is the most common cause of an unexpected tax bill at lodgment.

Does withholding include HELP or HECS repayments?

Yes, if you told your employer you have a study loan. Tick the study loan box to see the extra amount included in your withholding.

I have a second job. Why is so much tax taken out?

The tax-free threshold is only claimed at one job, so your second employer withholds from the first dollar. That is correct, and it prevents a shortfall at lodgment because your two incomes are taxed together on assessment.
