Your late tax refund depends on three things: how much tax was withheld from your pay, what deductions you can claim, and any offsets you were entitled to in each year - and for typical PAYG employees, unlodged years are worth hundreds to a few thousand dollars each. The exact figure is knowable before you commit to anything: ATO pre-fill data shows your income and withholding for every outstanding year, so a tax agent can estimate each year's position in the first review.
Why withheld tax usually runs ahead of actual tax
Australia's PAYG withholding tables are deliberately conservative - they assume your pay rate continues all year and don't know about your deductions. That structural over-withholding is why around three-quarters of individual lodgers receive refunds in a normal year, with the average refund historically sitting in the low-to-mid thousands. The same mechanics apply to your unlodged years: part-year work taxed at full-year rates, second jobs withheld at higher rates, and bonuses or termination payments over-withheld all push refunds up. Then come the deductions nobody claimed because nobody lodged: work-related travel and vehicle, uniforms and laundry, tools, home office, self-education, union fees, donations, income protection insurance, and franking credits on even modest share holdings.
What multi-year backlogs typically look like
Every backlog is different, but the patterns are consistent. Straight PAYG employees with standard deductions: most years come back refunds, commonly $800–$3,000 per year. Mixed years - an ABN side gig, a capital gain, a HECS repayment shortfall - produce a blend, where refund years offset debt years. The pleasant surprise rate is high: people consistently overestimate what they'll owe and underestimate what's waiting, because dread does the accounting before the data does. And there's a penalty kicker in your favour: the ATO generally doesn't apply Failure to Lodge penalties to refund-result returns, so clean refund years typically cost nothing in fines no matter how late they are.
Getting your actual number
We pull your ATO pre-fill for every outstanding year - income, withholding, interest, dividends, government payments - and estimate each year's likely position before lodging. Deduction reconstruction then improves the numbers further. From there, fee-from-refund means the catch-up can cost you nothing upfront for refund years: our fee comes out of the money the ATO was holding anyway. Refunds are then processed per return, usually within 10–14 business days of electronic lodgement.
