The 31 October rule, and the Saturday quirk

The standard individual deadline is 31 October following the end of the financial year. When it lands on a weekend, as it does in 2026, the ATO accepts lodgment on the next business day without penalty: Monday 2 November 2026. Don't plan around the extra two days; plan around October.

Miss it and the failure to lodge penalty clock can start: $364 for each 28 days late, up to $1,820 per return. Full detail in our late tax return fine guide. Returns that produce a refund generally escape penalty, but why leave your own money with the ATO?

Want more time? The tax agent extension

Registered tax agents lodge under the ATO's lodgment program, which extends most clients' deadlines well past October, commonly to 15 May 2027, with interim dates depending on your prior-year outcome. The catch everyone misses: you must be on the agent's client list by 31 October 2026 to get the extended date. Signing up in November doesn't retro-fit the extension, although an agent can still lodge and argue your case. See how remission works.

One more agent benefit: even if your return produces a bill, agent-program lodgment often defers the payment due date too.

When should you actually lodge? Not 1 July

Lodging in the first fortnight of July is the number-one cause of amended returns: employer income statements aren't finalised, bank interest and dividend pre-fill hasn't landed, and health fund data is missing. The ATO itself recommends waiting until pre-fill completes, typically late July. Lodge then for the fastest, cleanest refund, and see how long processing takes.

Frequently asked questions

When can I lodge my 2026 tax return?
From 1 July 2026, but late July is smarter, once ATO pre-fill data is complete.
When is the tax return due in 2026 in Australia?
31 October 2026 for self-lodgers, effectively Monday 2 November because the 31st is a Saturday. Agent clients registered by 31 October may have until 15 May 2027.
What happens if I miss the 2026 tax return deadline?
A failure to lodge penalty of $364 for each 28 days late, capped at $1,820 per return, can apply, though refund returns usually aren't penalised. Lodge as soon as possible either way.
When will I get my 2026 tax refund?
Most electronically lodged returns are processed within about two weeks of lodgment.
When do I have to pay if I owe tax in 2026?
The due date is on your notice of assessment, generally 21 November 2026 for on-time self-lodgers and later for many agent clients. After that, daily interest applies.
